Neonatal Education and Support Groups
NYU Hospitals Center's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a special nursery for newborn babies who need medical or surgical care at birth. The NICU is a NYS designated Regional Perinatal Center capable of caring for the most critically ill newborns.  The health care professionals who take care of the babies are highly qualified. The goal of the NICU team is to provide optimal care in a supportive, family-centered environment. The family is an important member of the team as well as an active participant in the care of the child. Family education and discharge planning are an important part of the care provided. Parents meet with the doctors and nurses regularly to discuss their children's medical and developmental progress. In addition, there are family support groups coordinated by the NICU team. Classes are scheduled depending on the needs of individual children. After discharge, we have follow-up programs that include the Neonatal Comprehensive Continuous Care Program (NCCCP) and the Infant Apnea/SIDS Program. These discharge services are provided when recommended by the NICU team. For more information or to have your questions answered, contact the NICU team at (212) 263-5790 or (212) 263-8595.

Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine Support Programs
Patient and family education activities are an integral part of the rehabilitation experience. Parents are counseled on the nature of their child's disability and how best to cope with the problems associated with nurturing a child with a disability, including the physical, psychological, social, and financial aspects of care.

Support groups are available for patients' families. In addition, a special program has been developed for siblings. This program provides a supportive forum for exploration and discussion of thoughts, feelings, hopes, and fears related to being the "well" child in a family where a sibling has special needs. For more information on the programs and support groups available in the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, contact the Patient Education Department at (212) 263-6987.
